FORMAT:
The Sturges Memorial event commemorates Tony (Thelston) Sturges (1953-2013), a great Tasmanian character, patron of the chess scene, its players and a devotee of offbeat openings. This is a fundraiser for the TCA. This year’s event replicates the set of opening positions from the 4th edition in 2017 (see if you can spot the connection).
SCHEDULE:
Six rounds of 10 minutes plus 2 seconds per move. Openings: -
Round 1: The Elephant Gambit 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5
Round 2: The Orangutan 1.b4
Round 3: The Kangaroo 1. d4 e6 2. c4 Bb4+
Round 4: The Black Lion Defence 1. e4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d6 3. d4 Nbd7
Round 5: The Pterodactyl 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 g6 3. d4 Bg7 4. c4 Qa5+ 5. Nc3 d6
Round 6: The Double Duck 1.d4 d5 2.f4 f5
ENTRIES:
Registrations close at 7:00pm on the 28th of April. You can register online, or in person on the day.
FEES & LEVIES:
Entry fees may be paid on the day in cash (please tender the correct change). Entry fees may also be paid online prior to the event by credit card or by direct transfer.
All Competitors $30
This event is open to all players regardless of local club or association membership. All moneys are donated to the Tasmanian Chess Association.
